Sewing + losing weight

Readers, I have a problem. Well sort of a problem. My favorite hobby is getting in the way of weight loss, at least in my mind. When sewing is all about fit how can I continue to sew clothes and continue to lose weight? I've lost 20 pounds so since March (yay!), and still want to lose more. Which means everything I have sewn will hopefully be too big. So when losing weight when should one sew? Is it better to make clothes all along or just make clothes that will fit when the weight is gone?

I've been feeling blah about this whole conundrum and as a result haven't really sewn for a few weeks and haven't even lost weight for the last few weeks, just maintained. Has anyone else dealt with something like this? I hate feeling blah about something that I really love doing (sewing) and something that makes me feel better (losing weight). Perhaps I've just lost my sewing mojo.

  1. I totally feel your pain. I had to start losing weight at the beginning of the year as I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I lost 20 lbs fairly fast, but have been stuck for a couple of months, which is discouraging..I've been afraid to sew anything fitted, as I really need to lose at least another 20 lbs, so I have only sewed skirts with elastic waists... Plus I just started my own business so I'm really busy and too tired in the evenings to even think about sewing...
    BTW, you look fabulous!!!!!!

    1. Great weight loss journey!, Erika 😃

I commend you for all the hard work you put yourself through. I know it ain't easy 🙏

Losing weight can be done with zero exercise minutes per day. Weight loss comes down to energy balance, as long as you’re eating fewer calories than you are burning (you burn calories every second, regardless of what you’re doing), you will lose weight. Exercise is one way to manipulate this energy balance and increase the amount of calories burned.

So yes, it is certainly possible to exercise for 1 minute and lose weight.

1 minute of specific weight loss routines, is equivalent to 45 minutes of moderate exercise at the gym 🏋️

To be honest, I don't know too much more about it other than it working great for me and hubby, click here to take their 1 minute quiz: 1 Minute Weight Loss

  2. Good for you! You definitely need to sew for now - just maybe not so many pieces, or ones more easy to adjust. Since you sew, it makes it easier to alter down for several sizes. Or you can bless someone els and give the garment that no longer fits to someone else. You need to feel pretty at every size!

  3. I have the same problem. The idea of skirts with elastic or drawstring waists sounds good. Mostly I sew items where fit is not very important such as sleep shirts, robes, sun hats, purses/totes, curtains, pillowcases, etc.

  4. Oh! good! well my problem is the opposite, I mean, I gained weight, and the things I have sewn don't fit anymore, right now I am trying to loose the weight and I haven't sewn nothing.
I guess you can fix the clothes you have, OR if you are planning to loose more weight you should wait and when you have the weight you want then you start sewing again.

  5. First of all, congratulations on all your weight loss. This is a good problem to have! I lost 40 pounds after having a baby and I know how it feels to want to sew, but sew what? I think you should look into knits. You can make a lot of nice dresses (such as a wrap dress) and tops that will still look nice once you lose the weight. Definetaly avoid anything fitted, and if you do choose to go that route, keep the items you sew during this time to a minimum.

After all, you want to love what you sew. And losing weight is not fun if you can't even enjoy the body you have now!! I wish you all the best in your weight loss journey!

  6. Sew all along. Make things that will look good being belted, and resign yourself to alterations.

Blouses can always be tucked in, and a-line skirts aren't too difficult to alter. Simple designs in jersey fabrics and tunic style dresses (that are worn belted) are also good options.

Mostly I hate buying clothing because it rarely fits well, so I'd rather make "quick and easy" items to wear than buy anything other than basic t-shirts and tanks!

  7. You can go one of two ways: either make clothes that you can easily alter to fit you later (skirts, anything with accessible side seams and not too many darts), or make clothes that will fit you at a multitude of weights (knits, the aforementioned wrap dresses, things with elastic). Some of it depends where the most weight is coming off, too -- it'll be easier to sew for the areas of your body that seem to be maintaining their size. Worst case, think of now as a time to experiment with styles and fabrics you might not normally try, so when you outgrow (outshrink?) it in a few months, you won't feel bad getting rid of it!

  8. I'm working on losing weight right now as well. I've been sewing more seperates rather than dresses but if I do I'm trying to stick with things that will fit later. Like my waist probably won't change much so a dress like the Macaron, which I just made, will hopefully still fit later. But that's me. Knits are great for being flexible like a McCalls 5974 is very forgiving and will mold with you as you lose weight. I have one in mind for myself here for Fall. Congrats on your weightloss! I'm having trouble right now myself and am getting frustrated....grrr!

  9. I would sew something a size or two smaller, Erika. You are sewing and working on reaching a goal. Double win.

  10. Congrats on the weight loss! You look great. I think you should sew for where you are now. You need to feel good about how you look every step of the way. Also, you can't exactly do any fitting work on the future you :)

  12. Congratulations on your weight loss. my advice is for you to sew for where you are now and just keep sewing, it is a win-win.

  13. Sewing is about so many things - not least of which is learning new techniques (which work for any size) and expressing creativity. As your body will possibly change shape and size a number of times throughout your life (going on a variety of different paths, possibly), and as one needs clothes for each of those times, I don't think it's a bad idea to make a few, good things that fit right now. I'm not suggesting that your pursuit of weight loss won't yield permanent results, just that our bodies change as we change - in all kinds of directions. Isn't it good to be well-outfitted at a variety of sizes?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh, and knits flatter at many stages and shapes without any alterations - save a belt, maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I was going to suggest many of the things that have already been suggested, but I'll add one tidbit. Why not take this opportunity to learn to do alterations?

    And maybe sew some accessories?

Losing weight is hard but the payoff is so worth it. You look great! Good luck on the remainder of your journey.

  16. I've been down this road myself recently. Sewing while working toward my goal weight was a challenge. I *hate* doing alterations, so I stuck to things that either weren't too fitted or would be easy to alter. Knits come in handy, as well as skirts. Gored skirts are especially good, since you have multiple seams that you can take in. I also chose not to make anything that was terribly involved, because I didn't want to invest a lot of time into something that would soon be too large.

  17. I know just what you mean. I have decided to keep sewing and to sew it to celebrate the weight I've lost right now. Some times I try to make things that could easily be taken in but for the most part I'm rewarding myself for the weight already lost and if I loose more then these clothes I've made can be remade into blouses or donated to others to enjoy! Congrats!

  18. I have the same issue.
My plan is to make clothes for a size I aim to be, but a realistic size. A few years back I was a perfect UK 12.
I'm getting a Lady Valet tailors dummy for Christmas so I will be able to fit roughly to that size and then make final adjustments when I reach my goal!
The only garments I'm making for my present size are those for specific occasions, my birthday meal, Christmas parties etc... the rest can wait.
I like that I have so many pretty garments to look forward to!
Congratulations on your progress so far!

  19. make handbags for now and also wrapped skirts!
I took in LOTD Of room and reshaped my cardigand( lands end cashmere to boot wasnt going to give away so easily, I just shaped it how I wanted it to be , pinned and fitted them perfectly and serged the extra OFF!
Knits are great for this, save the wovens( my personal favorit) for later but be ready to account for the fact that your weight may come off in diff areas on your body, so do not make smalle sizes just yet ( hmm,how would I know that?? Mistake I made@) HTH

  21. I have a similar problem. I started dancing beginning of the year. And I've lost approx 4 inches off my measurements. Now the stuff I made in February is too big, the high waisted skirts are now more like a hipster and the 20's dress looks like a oversized flour sack on me. Gone from 38, 30, 40 to 34.5, 27, 39 (Although I do fluctuate up an inch throughout a month). The thing is I never intended this weightloss it was a total accident.
