Ceylon Dress

Another project finished! This is the Ceylon dress from Colette Patterns. I used a light weight navy and white polka dot cotton print from Fashion Fabrics Club. For this project I made muslin, and then increased the fronts (at the buttons) about half an inch. It fits like a dream! The shape of this dress is flattering and comfortable to wear. I think it's my favorite thing I've sewn so far! I was so happy to wear it on Easter.



Fabric Shopping!

Have a look at some of the fabric I've been hoarding lately.

A silk Milly print from Gorgeous fabrics. I plan on making basically the same exact dress. It's very similar to the simplicity 2444 dress I made, just without the sleeves and collar. Very cute and without the $400 price tag!

This is what I'm currently working on a navy polka dot ceylon dress. Hopefully I can wear it on Easter.

I'm loving this postcard cotton print I bought at my local fabric store, perfect for a summer dress.

Simplicity 2337 finished

I finally posed for pictures in Simplicity 2337. This is a dress made for the spring palette challenge, in a navy matte jersey. A simple but very wearable dress, easy to dress up or down. The pattern is a project runway pattern with many different options, I chose the view with the crew neck and pleated sleeves.

Beignet Skirt

I finished the last piece in my spring palette collection. This is the beignet skirt from colette patterns. I made the same skirt last year in red denim, my second version came along much smoother. I used a cotton poplin in a sunny yellow, and used a quilting cotton for the lining. The buttons are from m&j in nyc, and so cute, 12 buttons in all! This is the perfect piece fro spring and a classic skirt.

Spring Wrap Sweater

I started making this sweater in early 2008, finished all the pieces and then just left it. The finishing on this pattern was crazy, which is why I left it for so long. The pattern is Ether from Rowan Magazine 43. I left the edges unfinished and opted for a braided belt, which gave it a more beachy feel. The yarn is a cotton from Colinette called banyan. Its was incredibly annoying to seam with because it quickly became untwisted and tangled. It is satisfying to finish a forgotten UFO.

Sewing Tools

I wanted to show everyone one of my favorite sewing tools, from the cupcake goddess! My heirloom tomato pincushion, tailor's ham and seam roll. Aren't they gorgeous? Nothing like the boring ham and tomatos they sell at the fabric stores. I love having tools that are cute and useful.  I use the tailor's ham all the time. I keep it handy hanging on the bookself next to my ironing board.

Using the right sewing tools really makes a difference in the final product. Last month during me-made-march I really noticed the difference in the quality of garments I have sewn in the last year. My red beignet skirt I made a year ago is a disaster compared to the one I'm sewing now! Ironing is annoying but so important. I think my cute ham and seam roll, make ironing a little less annoying.

They are not only cute but so well made. I haven't seen a speck of sawdust come out of these. You can buy your own set on etsy. Can't wait to see what else is to come from the Cupcake Goddess!
